I first memorized Psalms 23 when I was a child of about 10. I was so excited. I recited it in Sunday School. What is amazing about it is that as a child, I had trouble remembering things. Little did I know that I would have to recite that scripture to save my life. For the next fifty odd years, I relied on this text for my strenght, protection, healing, and comfort. It's one thing to think you know The LORD. It another to know that you know beyond any doubt That the LORD IS.
What I find interesting about this scripture is that all the years I knew and recited it, I never knew the discipline aspects of it until recently. "Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." And it is so true. Once you realize the love of God, when you notice the things He does to keep you in line, it -is- comforting. Like a little child, they don't know it, but they receive comfort from discipline. Children who don't receive discipline lash out in a very extreme way.
