It's interesting that Jesus, says, "you will be my disciples" instead of you "already are my disciples". Do you think verse 8 indicates that a disciple must bear fruit?
I made some connections between Psalms 1 and John 15:One- is yeilding fruit Another- is remaining in the vine John 15, and meditating on the Law of the Lord day and night Yet another- whither, Psalms 1:3 John 15:6 some definitions of whiter are become dry, shrivel lose vitality, lose freshness incapable of action make speechless One more - John 15:5-8 and Psalms 1:4-6, The way of the wicked will perish, To answer your question, Joshua, Yes you must bear fruit to be a disciple of Jesus. This fruit is the Fruit of the Spirit. Jesus' command in John 15:17, "Love each other" attest to this.
My Lord! He said is we abide in him and his word abides in us then we could ask what we will and it will be done. That's wild! If we ask anything with the word dwelling in us and we are centering ourselves around Jesus, he will do it for us. God didn't place limits on us as far as what to ask for; he is telling us how to posture ourselves for the asking. We really do have to posture ourselves to be ready and able to receive what the Lord is willing to give us. Without these two prerequisites I am not sure that any of us could handle receiving some of the things that we ask for, and with verse 7 running right into verse eight where it talks about God being glorified by our bearing much fruit I am thinking that maybe the Lord wants us to posture ourselves to glorify God with whatever we are asking for and receiving. When God gives us a blessing it is for us to enjoy as well as for us to plant and produce more to the glory of God and for his kingdom.

ReplyDeleteYes! Bearing much fruit from this verse is an outward indication of being a disciple. That's what I think.
